The Astonishing 2016 '2017 Micro Date Lettering' Mule | MS66 | Elizabeth II (1952-), Mule One Pound, 2016 / 2017 'Micro Date Lettering' Mule, ELIZABETH. II. D.G. REG. F.D, crowned head right, rev. rose, leek, thistle and shamrock within crown, intermittent milled edge (Spink J39), light contact marks to obverse high points, especially to neck, otherwise lustrous and much as issued, muled with reverse dies for 2017, excessively rare and an highly important error coin in the Decimal series thus, in NGC holder, graded MS66 (Cert. #6135257-001).
The massive recoinage of 2016 and 2017 resulted in a numer of errors ranging from the popular 'fried egg' effect when the centre pill splays into the brass outer collar causing a cascade of further problems with the milling or lack thereof on parts or the whole of the coin. Whilst entirely mechanical and usually filtered out by rigourous quality control the fast turnaround of the old 'round pound' for the new dodecagonal issues resulted in many poor production 'errors' entering circulation. However a more remarkable and indeed more true-to-meaning error occurred as a result of the two-year production period - the unanticipated muling of a '2017 Reverse' with the 2016 obverse. Excluding the fabled 2008 undated 20 Pence coin, the improper muling of micro or regnal dates with numerals has not been seen since the 17th Century, and as such this almost inconceivable mistake is an important and remarkable rarity in the decimal coin series
Estimate: £400 - £600
