S-1095; N-675. Bust Crowned (BMC viii) type. Obverse: + ÆÐELSTAN REX, crowned, helmeted, draped bust right, breaking inner circle; Reverse: + BIORNEARD MO LOND CI, short cross pattee. Quite deeply toned and evenly struck, though with a somewhat rusty obverse die. A minor spot of lamination is also noted on the obverse, though does not distract.
Known to historians as the first English king, rather than merely one of many Anglo-Saxon kings, Aethelstan conquered the last remaining Viking holdouts in the north of England, and crushed revolts against his rule. Beating back invasion in 937, Aethelstan was an accomplished tactician and leader. Also, of his concern was legislative reform, and even today a great number of his law texts survive. Aethelstan died childless in 939, and the throne passed to his brother. Under Aethelstan, minting of coinage was centralized and a uniform issue was finally created to circulate across the whole of England, with a northern mint being established in York.
