GREAT BRITAIN. Anglo-Saxon. Kings of All England. Penny, ND (ca. 1040-42). Lund (in Denmark) Mint; Toci, moneyer. Harthacnut. PCGS AU-58.
S-1170. Danish type. Obverse: + HΛRÐECN, draped bust left, raising hand; Reverse: : TΘ-ΘCI ΘN L-VDI, voided long cross, with pellet at center, triple crescent ends, and with crescents in two angles. Somewhat compact but rather attractively toned, this Danish issue offers a great pedigree as well.
Succeeding his brother as the rightful heir of the English throne, Harthacnut was the last Dane to rule in England. Harthacnut ruled with an iron fist with little time for advisement, and at times ordered the burning and destruction of towns. Harthacnut died in 1042 while attending a wedding, during which he consumed a vast amount of alcohol. To view all items from the Paul C. Runze Collection, click
