GREAT BRITAIN. Noble, ND (1377-99). Calais Mint; mm: -/cross pattee. Richard II. PCGS Genuine--Edge Repaired, Unc Details.
S-1662; Fr-100; N-1307. Type IIIa. Weight: 7.68 gms. Obverse: Richard, holding sword and shield, standing facing in ship; ornaments: -1-1-1, ropes: 3/1, quatrefoils: 3/4, lis: 4/3; double saltire stops in legend; Reverse: Ornate cross with lis at ends and R in center; crowned lions passant in quarters; all within tressure of eight double arcs; trefoils in spandrels; double saltire stops in legend. A well centered and well struck specimen, offering golden-orange brilliance in no evidence of any real handling. Some very minor edge repair is noted near 11 o'clock on the obverse, but is extremely subtle and does not interfere with the overall allure.
Richard II inherited an England that had been ravaged by the Black Death smoldering plague infections. Putting aside the Magna Carta, Richard very strongly believed in the power of the monarch and wielded that power aggressively. His heavy-handed extraction of taxes from peasants stoked uprisings and led to instability. Richard’s mental instability made him unpopular with the nobility as well as the peasantry. Ultimately, Richard was deposed by his first cousin Henry, and was executed after a plot to murder the new king was uncovered. To view all items from the Paul C. Runze Collection, click here.
