SICILY. Akragas. AR Tetradrachm (17.47 gms), ca. 460-450/46 B.C. NGC Ch AU, Strike: 3/5 Surface: 5/5. Overstruck.
HGC-2, 77; Westermark-349b (O10/R35); SNG ANS-973 (same dies). Obverse: Sea eagle standing left; Reverse: Crab, with the features of a human face on its shell, within shallow incuse circle. Rather deeply toned and well struck on an uncertain recycled flan, this alluring specimen exhibits hardly any evidence of handling, all while enticing the gaze of the viewer with the lifelike human countenance portrayed on the shell of the crab. A great feat of fifth century engraving.
From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.
Estimate: $5000 - $10000
