SICILY. Katane. AR Tetradrachm (16.30 gms), Obverse die signed by Choirion, ca. 405-403/2 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 1/5.
HGC-2, 575 (same dies as illustration); SNG ANS-1258 (same dies); Jameson-548 (this coin). Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo facing very slightly left; [XOIPIΩN to outer left], bow to left, lyre to right; Reverse: Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving quadriga right which begins to round column in background; above, crowning Nike flying left; in exergue, crayfish right. Despite some fairly obvious roughness to the surfaces, this VERY RARE and ever-desirable type is at the forefront of the always sought after facing head issues, and in the larger format that the Tetradrachm denomination allows. Among the facing head types from Sicily, those engraved by the artist Choirion are undoubtedly the RAREST. Adding further allure and intrigue to this monumental specimen is its incredible pedigree, as it, in addition to the Salton cabinet, hails from those of Jameson and Evans--luminaries within the 19th and early 20th century roundtable of numismatics.

From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.

Ex: Robert Jameson Collection, # 548.

Ex: Arthur J. Evans Collection.

Estimate: $15000 - $25000
