SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (17.30 gms), struck under Gelon I, ca. 480-475 B.C. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5.
HGC-2, 1306; Boehringer-118 (V54/R42); SNG ANS-30 (same rev. die) & 31 (same obv. die). Obverse: Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving quadriga right; above, crowning Nike flying right; Reverse: Diademed head of Arethousa right; four dolphins around. Ever so slightly off-center on the obverse, this impressive specimen nevertheless features an enchanting cabinet tone and a great archaic nature that is dazzlingly problem-free.
