SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-406 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (17.14 gms), ca. 440-430 B.C. NGC VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.
HGC-2, 1316; Boehringer-631 (V319/R434); SNG ANS-201 (same dies). Obverse: Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving quadriga right; above, crowning Nike flying right; Reverse: Head of Arethousa right, with hair held in broad band and gathered in chignon at back; four dolphins around. Rather well handled but deeply toned, this wholesome example serves as an excellent representative from the transitional period.
