MACEDON. Mende. AR Tetradrachm (17.13 gms), ca. 460-423 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5. Fine Style.
HGC-3.1, 545; Noe-36 = Jameson-1964 (this coin). Obverse: Inebriated Dionysos, holding kantharos, reclining on the back of a donkey standing right; to right, bird perched right upon branch; Reverse: Linear square containing vine with leaves, tendrils, and four bunches of grapes. A popular and fairly RARE type, this extraordinary specimen offers a strike of fine style along with a charming gunmetal gray tone and pleasing centering. Some very minor marks and horn silver are present on the reverse, but do not at all detract from the artistic marvel offered here. Given its "recent" discovery as part of the Kaliandra Hoard in 1913, and since the time at which it was deposited in the 5th century B.C., it has likely only had two long-time owners, Robert Jameson and Salton, an interesting aspect given its age.

From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.

Ex: Robert Jameson Collection, # 1964.

Ex: Kaliandra (Mende) Hoard of 1913 (IGCH 358).

Estimate: $10000 - $20000
