MACEDON. Under the Romans. AR Tetradrachm (17.10 gms), Amphipolis or Thessalonika Mint, ca. 148-147 B.C. NGC Ch EF★, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5. Fine Style. Die Shift.
HGC-3.1, 1106; MacKay-19.1 (O16/R17; this coin, with incorrect pedigree to de Sartiges) = E. Weber-1058 (this coin). Obverse: Laureate and draped bust of Artemis right, with bow and quiver over shoulder; all set upon boss of Macedonian shield; Reverse: Club right; monogram above; all within oak wreath. A VERY RARE and incredibly impressive specimen, this example, struck ever so slightly off-center, offers a deep cabinet tone and exceptionally sharp and artistic strike, all while possessing a majestic pedigree from numerous fabled collections. Given the bold and strong central relief and the thinner nature of the flan near the peripheries, NGC has elected not to encapsulate this specimen, but rather offer a photo certificate instead. A piece that is a must for the advanced cabinet in Macedonian or Republican-era issues.

From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.
