LOKRIS. Lokri Opuntii. AR Stater (12.23 gms), ca. 350-340 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5. Fine Style.
HGC-4, 989; cf. BCD Lokris-63; Humphris & Delbridge-Group 19, 136f (O13/R49; this coin). Obverse: Head of Demeter left, wearing grain wreath; Reverse: Ajax advancing right, holding sword and shield; Boeotian helmet below. This choice example is very nicely struck and centered upon the flan, and the high relief of the design makes it a deserving recipient of the fine style designation. An orange glow highlights the hair of Demeter and Ajax, which contrasts with the deeply toned surfaces. Only a touch of wear exists on the highest elements of the design. Overall, this example is one of the most wholesome and appealing examples surviving from Lokris.

From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.
