PTOLEMAIC EGYPT. Ptolemy I Soter, 323-283 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (15.64 gms), Uncertain mint in Egypt, possibly Pelusium, ca. 306-305 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5. Countermark, Scratch.
Svor-107; CPE-77; SNG Cop-Unlisted. In the name of Alexander III of Macedon. Obverse: Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, wearing elephant skin and with aegis around neck; Reverse: Athena advancing right, brandishing spear and wearing shield on extended left arm; to right, monogram and eagle standing right on thunderbolt. Presenting rather enticing color, this barely circulated specimen offers a broad flan and excellent artistry. The countermark on the cheek of Alexander appears to be a crouching animal, while that on the reverse is a monogram along with a tiny eagle standing left.

From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.

Estimate: $700 - $1000
