ZENO, A.D. Second reign, 476-491. AV Solidus (4.45 gms), Constantinople Mint, 3rd Officina, A.D. 477-491. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5. Ex Jewelry.
RIC-910 & 929. Obverse: D N ZENO PERP AVG, diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear and shield; Reverse: VICTORIA AVGGG, Victory standing left, holding long jeweled cross; star to right; Γ//CONOB. Though there is evidence of wearing, this is evenly distributed across the high points, giving this gold issue a nice, authentic feel. While this issue was, at one point, used for jewelry, it is a charming representative of the type that tells the story of the transition of the Roman Empire, as the city of Rome was to fall to the barbarians during the reign of Zeno.
Estimate: $400 - $600
