CHILE. 50 Centavos, 1856-So. Santiago Mint. GCS Certified.
KM-128. From an original mintage of 606,000 coins, this 1856 50 Centavos from Santiago was one of the unlucky few to sink to the ocean floor and with the S.S. Central America. The current example would have been recently minted when it went into the ocean and original mint luster can still be seen under the "shipwreck effect" seen on the surfaces. The dated side features a condor with wings spread that show original mint frost, however, a large portion of the legend is lost to corrosion on the right side. The other side is lustrous and mostly undamaged from the salt water, featuring plumed arms within a wreath. An interesting bit of shipwreck treasure.
