GERMANY. Empire. Boje Friedrich Nikolaus von Scholtz Cast Iron Medal, 1915. GEM UNCIRCULATED.
cf. Zetzmann-2101 (silver, smaller module). By P. Sturm & R. Ball in Berlin. Diameter: 110mm; Weight: 263.31 gms. The German artillery. Obverse: Exz. Scholtz - VIII Armee, uniformed bust left within wreath; Reverse: Three soldiers operating mortar; shells in foreground. Edge: A few light spots of rust, otherwise plain. Glossy black surfaces, with just a few hints of rub on the highest points. VERY RARE and highly impressive in this large format, with a diameter of 4-1/3 inches.

Friedrich von Scholtz started his military career before turning 20, and served as a volunteer in the Franco-Prussian War after gaining experience as a gunner in the artillery. Following the war, he studied at the Military Academy in Potsdam, continuing his education in artillery. By the time of World War I, he had attained the rank of General of the Artillery and was appointed to commander of the 8th Army, both of which are indicated on this medal.
