Portrait produced by Swiss engraver Jacques Dassier while working in Russia at the St. Petersburg mint. Obv. Crowned bust of Elizabeth right. Rev. Double-headed Imperial eagle with scepter and orb, and date above. One of the classic rarities in all of Russian numismatics. This attractive example displays rich reddish-gray patina with a sharp strike. Only light wear is noted, with moderate surface marks.
Having worked at the Royal Mint in London from 1740-1745, as assistant engraver, Dassier made his way to St. Petersburg in 1756, where he produced dies for silver Roubles and gold 10 Roubles. He left for Copenhagen in 1759 and died later that year.
