Sicily, Kainon, Doublestrike. ; Sicily, Kainon, Doublestrike; c. 360-340 BC, AE 19-23, 8.31g. HGC-509, SNG ANS-1175. Obv: Winged griffin flying l.; below, [grasshopper] (not struck up). Rx. Horse prancing l., with trailing reins; star above, [KAINON] off flan in exergue. Surviving from the first strike: on obv. the griffin's hindquarters and curving tail repeated at bottom; on rev. the forepart of the horse, the exergue line, and traces of the legend reappear almost upside down at the top. The dies shifted substantially between the two strikes.Extremely unusual multiple striking. VF
