Its subject is Paul Morphy, an American chess prodigy who has been reviered as one of the Greatest chess masters of his era. Morphy is frequently mentioned in Walter Tevis's novel The Queen's Gambit as the favourite player of the main character, a chess prodigy named Beth Harmon.
