Bowers Books on Musical Instruments
Bowers, Q. David. A GUIDEBOOK OF AUTOMATIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. New York: Vestal, 1967. Two volumes, bound in one [as published]. 4to, original red cloth, gilt. (iii)–iv, 349, (1), + iv, 401–697, (3) pages; illustrated. Inscribed in 1968 and signed by the author. Rear hinge cracked; endpapers spotted. Very good or so. [with] Bowers, Q. David. PUT ANOTHER NICKEL IN: A HISTORY OF COIN-OPERATED PIANOS AND ORCHESTRIONS. Second printing. New York: Bonanza, 1966. 4to, original tan cloth-backed boards, lettered in black; jacket. viii, 248 pages; illustrated. Jacket wrinkled, else fine. [with] Bowers, Q. David. NICKELODEON THEATRES AND THEIR MUSIC. New York: Vestal, 1986. 4to, original pictorial card covers. xii, 212, (2) pages; illustrated. Spine bruise; near fine. The first work is infrequently seen, having a modest print run. It was the first attempt by Bowers to compile an encyclopedic work on automated musical instruments, with his 1966 Put Another Nickel In (also present here) having been a more general work. Automated musical instruments have remained a field of intense fascination to Bowers, who has published ten or so books on the subject.
