Snowden's 1860 Description of the Mint Cabinet
Snowden, James Ross. A DESCRIPTION OF ANCIENT AND MODERN COINS, IN THE CABINET COLLECTION AT THE MINT OF THE UNITED STATES. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co., 1860. 8vo, original green embossed cloth, gilt. xix, (2), 22–412 pages; frontispiece medallion plate engraved by medal ruling machine; text illustrations; folding statement; 27 plates of coins printed in relief with metallic tints, on a dark brown background. Plates toned, as usual; some browning and foxing; folding table with some separation at folds. Spine cloth with tears and chips; last 50 pages stained, not affecting legibility. Good or better. The first complete catalogue of coins in the Mint Collection, compiled by George Bull with the assistance of William E. Du Bois, assistant assayer and curator of the cabinet at the time. It is widely known by its original spine title: The Mint Manual of Coins of All Nations. The attractive embossed coin plates represent the first extensive American use of this novel and attractive method of illustration. Clain-Stefanelli 12543.
