(G R Francis, BNJ 1921-22, pp. 349; North 1967; Spink 2498), a trace of doubling to Philip's portrait and softness to extremities, otherwise a truly 'splendid' shilling, the portaits phenomenally bold for this notoriously weak type, the fields richly accentuated by age-old cabinet toning, approaching extremely fine for issue, extremely rare thus and an evident superior even to the record breaking Lockett specimen sold in these rooms in March 2011.
