JUDAEA, Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem). Hadrian. AD 117-138. Æ (22.5mm, 10.60 g, 11h). Foundation issue. Struck circa 130-132 CE or 135 CE. Laureate and draped bust right, seen from behind / Hadrian (as founder) plowing pomerium with yoke of oxen right; vexillum in background. Meshorer, Aelia 2; Rosenberger 1; RPC III 3964; Sofaer 2-4. Brown patina, porous. VF. Hendin (vol. 2, 264) Plate coin.

From the Kenneth S. Abramowitz Collection.

On many foundation coins of Aelia Capitolina, the vexillum is inscribed with various legion's identifying numbers. On this coin type, the legion is so far unknown. Kadman speculated it could be inscribed LEV but Meshorer thought LXF. To date, no specimen has has been found which satisfactorily settles the debate.
