French coinage of this period is commonly marked with a différent, mintmaster's symbol, in addition to the usual alphabetical mintmarks. On this specimen, the Hebrew letter shin refers to the Jewish mintmaster Simon de Navarre. After this issue, the mintmark A would be reserved for the mint of Paris.
