FIRST ITALIAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE, Italy. Palmanova. Besieged by the Austrian Empire, 17 April-24 June 1848. 2 Lire (160x160mm). Comissione di Finanza di Palmanoza. Pick S347. In PCGS encapsulation 80676150, graded Extremely Fine 45.

The Italian peninsula in 1848 was home to several fractured kingdoms, including the Austrian-ruled Kingdom of Lombardia-Venetia, the Papal states, and the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. As revolution spread throughout Europe, Italians too sought to establish liberal constitutions, drive the Austrians from the peninsula, and unite all of Italy into a single nation. Hopes ran high when, with the blessing of Pope Pius IX, King Charles Albert of Piedmont-Sardinia declared war on the Austrians in March. Over the next few months, military setbacks and factional infighting doomed the Italian cause, as Charles Albert's Italian allies broke off one by one until he ultimately sued for peace with the Austrians in July.
