Pylus situated upon the promontory of Coryphasium, which formed the northern termination of the bay of Navarino. Below the ruined fortress at the northern end there was a cavern, called "the ox's belly," which gave name to the small circular port immediately below it. This cave was, according to the Peloponnesian tradition, the one into which the infant Hermes drove the cattle he had stolen from Apollo.
