South India, Colonial Period (c.1650-1750), gold Porto-Novo Pagoda, 3.43g, three-quarter length figure of Vishnu under a canopy, holding conch and discus, rev. blank with natural granulation (similar to Scholten 1259; Mears, Felicitas 2011, type SG4), small edge split, extremely fine.
Pagodas of Porto-Novo type were issued by many authorities along the Coromandal coast in the colonial period as this format proved acceptable to a wide range of traders. It may have been struck by the local Nawabs who controlled Porto Novo in the early 18th century, or they may have granted permission to one of the Colonial East India Companies to strike them.
This is a known type, usually containing 80-85% gold.
Estimate: £180 - £240
