Sir Alfred Gilbert, RA, MVO, DCL (1854-1934), is perhaps best known for the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain at Piccadilly Circus and surmounted by a winged statue of Anteros, though popularly but incorrectly known as "Eros" – his twin brother.
