John III, Ducas-Vatazes. 1222-1254. BI (or AE?) aspron trachy nomisma (26.9 mm, 2.13 g, 6 h). Thessalonica mint, Struck 1246-12-54. Standing figure of the Virgin, orans; stars in lower field to right and left / John (on left) wearing crown, and St. Demetrius nimbate, standing facing; holding patriarchal cross between them. Cf. SBCV 2130. Damaged VF, irregular flan as usual for Latin rulers era scyphates, flattened at some time in the past creating a large crease on obverse and a crease-ghost on reverse; olive patina . rare.
