George V, sovereign, 1916, bare head l., rev. St. George and the dragon (S.3996; M.218), practically uncirculated
bt. G K Coins, October 2003.
Scarce date.
An interesting fact regarding the 1916 London mint sovereign is that it featured in the Standard Catalogue in 1966 listed at £175, while the 1917 was listed at £200. It was excessively rare, until a couple of bags of coins with this date were rediscovered in the 1960s and the prices fell accordingly. The 1917 sovereign has remained incredibly scarce, see lot 258.
(500-700 GBP)
