Valentinian I, Western Roman Empire (AD 364-375). AV solidus (20mm, 4.27 gm, 12h). NGC VF 5/5 - 1/5, edge filing, wavy flan, scratches. Arles, ca. AD 365-366. D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG, rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valentinian I right, seen from front / RESTITVTOR-REIPVBLICAE, emperor standing facing, head right, labarum in right hand with Christogram on banner and palm on shaft, Victory left on globe in left; KONSTAN (TAN ligate) in exergue. RIC IX 1b.1. Depeyrot 13/1. Depeyrot, Arles 109, 159. Extremely rare issue.

The city of Arelatum (Arles) was renamed Constantina in AD 328 in honor of Constantine II. At that time, the mint ceased using mint marks of ARL and began using CONST or derivatives, hence the exergual mark on this issue, although scholars today continue to use the original city name.
