This last round £1 coin was meant as a "farewell" to the old format and issued in commemorative sets only; no coins of this type were issued into circulation. A new 12-sided bimetallic £1 coin was introduced into circulation in the United Kingdom on 28th March 2017, and the earlier round coins were demonetised on 15th October 2017
