Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 BC. Silver Tetradrachm (16.84g). Babylon mint, c. 311-305 BC. Head right of Herakles, wearing lion's skin headdress. Reverse: Zeus enthroned left, holding eagle and scepter, in left field, sickle (?). Price 2768. Struck in high relief with a natural soft grey tone. About Extremely Fine. Estimated Value $500 - UP
This is a very attractive representative of the massive issues of the successors of Alexander the Great at Babylon. Literally millions and millions of tetradrachms were minted to fulfill the immense demand for the military, including-payment arrears.
