Italy, Divus Julius Caesar Cast Æ Uniface Plaquette. Uncertain artist, circa early 16th century. • DIVI • IVLI •, laureate and draped bust to right; lituus behind, star above / Blank. Kress 270; Medals and Plaquettes from the Sigmund Morgenroth Collection, no. 329; Seymour De Ricci, The Gustave Dreyfus Collection: Reliefs and Plaquettes, no. 52. 36.11g, 41mm.

Very Fine; some scratches and edge knock.

From a private English collection.

The prototype for this plaquette is unknown but could possibly be an intaglio of Caesar in the Medici collection which had the star and lituus but was un-draped (see Ricci). For the use of plaquettes on bookbindings see Hobson, A. "Plaquettes on Bookbindings." Studies in the History of Art, vol. 22, National Gallery of Art, 1989, pp. 165-69, and for this particular plaquette cf. p. 166 and fig. 1.
