Denmark. Knud den Store (the Great) 1019-1035. AR Penning (20mm, 0.95g, 1h). Lund mint, Wulf moneyer. :DIIEOГHDEXUIIED+OIEΛX, Agnus Dei standing right, A N on tablet below / +PVLF MON SIHTVN, voided short cross with pellet in center; pellets within annulets in each quarter. Malmer chain 153 (Danish chain), dies 9.556.5802; Hauberg -. 1 die identical coins recorded by Malmer. Twice pierced, edge loss. Extremely Rare. Very Fine.
The English Agnus Dei prototype was a very exclusive type which was only struck in ca 1009. To this day only about 22 are known, however in Denmark the type became popular and all Danish kings from Cnut to Svend Estridsen issued this type and variants of it. When first published, chain 153 was believed to originate in Sigtuna. However, the homogenous weight of the coins in the chain, which is uncommon for Sigtuna coinage in the 1020s, the stylistic similarities to a group of heavier Agnus Dei minted in Lund and obverse Long Cross dies in the name of Cnut, all point in to a Danish origin. Moreover, the reverse legend "SIHTVN" is much similar in spelling to a reverse die (R. 154, +OSBERNONSITVN) in Beckers chain V which was most certainly struck in Lund. Therefore, Malmer suggested that the die was perhaps cut in Sigtuna and then transferred to Lund.
