Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1723-E AU Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Tours mint, cf. KM468 (for type), Gad-338 (R2), Dup-1638A. Short palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. Well-struck devices and pale-gold fields with shades of tangerine decorate the surfaces of this pleasing example. Only two examples of this mint-date were present in the 1971 Parke-Bernet sale, with none among the holdings of Donald Partrick. Sunk off the cost of Nova Scotia in 1725, the Le Chameau was transporting supplies to the New France (Canada), making a routine voyage when a storm blew it onto rocks. An unsuccessful attempt to recover the cargo was made in 1726, with the trove only being discovered in 1965, becoming one of the most substantial treasures ever found in the country.
