Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1723-I UNC Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Limoges mint, KM-Unl., Gad-338 (R4), Dup-1638A, L4L-465 (R5). Short palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. A rare specimen, bearing a chiseled bust, razor-sharp despite the few adjustment marks to the fields, presenting tangerine toning over the sun-gold surfaces. One of only 5 1723 mints awarded an R5 rating by L4L, and the first we have offered. Sunk off the cost of Nova Scotia in 1725, the Le Chameau was transporting supplies to the New France (Canada), making a routine voyage when a storm blew it onto rocks. An unsuccessful attempt to recover the cargo was made in 1726, with the trove only being discovered in 1965, becoming one of the most substantial treasures ever found in the country.

Ex. John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII (Stack's January 2006, Lot 396)
