Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1723-N AU58 NGC, Montpellier mint, KM468.11, Gad-338, Dup-1638A. Short palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. Exhibiting chiseled, very bold devices well-centered on the flan, and dressed in a pale gold tone with tangerine hues. Sunk off the cost of Nova Scotia in 1725, the Le Chameau was transporting supplies to the New France (Canada), making a routine voyage when a storm blew it onto rocks. An unsuccessful attempt to recover the cargo was made in 1726, with the trove only being discovered in 1965, becoming one of the most substantial treasures ever found in the country.

Ex. John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII (Stack's January 2006, Lot 402)
