Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1723-P UNC Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Dijon mint, KM468.12, Gad-338 (R2), Dup-1638A, L4L-465 (R2). Short palms variety. Utterly rare, confirmed by a complete paucity of examples coming to public auction in the last two decades, even missing from the John J. Ford, Jr., and Donald Partrick collections, as well as the 1971 Parke-Bernet sale, which featured extensive groups of these issues. Despite allover granularity as the result of having been submerged for centuries, likely from the Le Chameau shipwreck, the engraved devices remain whole and largely devoid of evidence of having entered circulation. As such, we imagine this piece will be met with celebration and premium bidding.
