Louis XV gold Louis d'Or de Bearn 1723-(cow) AU Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Pau mint, KM469, Gad-338a (R5), Dup-1638A, L4L-473 (R4). Short palms variety. Rarely do these Pau-minted issues come to market with any sort of frequency let alone numerous populating a single auction; here we have one of five such examples. Lemon-gold surfaces host gently struck devices, the proud young bust of Louis rising in clear contrast against low-lying fields bearing evidence of extensive time spent under water, possibly from the Le Chameau shipwreck as so many of these were.
