Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1724-H UNC Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, La Rochelle mint, KM470.8, Gad-339 (R), Dup-1638. Large palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. Boldly struck, showcasing full-defines motifs with hints of luster to the recesses. Sunk off the cost of Nova Scotia in 1725, the Le Chameau was transporting supplies to the New France (Canada), making a routine voyage when a storm blew it onto rocks. An unsuccessful attempt to recover the cargo was made in 1726, with the trove only being discovered in 1965, becoming one of the most substantial treasures ever found in the country.
Ex. John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII (Stack's January 2006, Lot 427)
