Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1724-N MS62 NGC, Montpellier mint, KM470.13, Gad-339 (R), Dup-1638, L4L-466 (R2). Large palms variety. A coin whose eye appeal already easily exceeds its comparatively lofty grade, presently situated as one of only three awarded this peak status from NGC. Perhaps minimally exposed to saltwater, this piece nicely pairs a slightly matte luster with clearly brilliant backlight, creating a visual presence that seems to sharpen the reliefs of the devices. We have only handled one representative in comparable quality--part of our September 2009 Long Beach sale #3006 (lot 20824)--which achieved $2415 at that time. Certainly a connoisseur's coin through and through.
