Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1724-V AU Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Troyes mint, cf. KM470.20 (date unlisted), Gad-339 (R2), Dup-1638, L4L-466 (R2). Large palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. A rare example, displaying sun-golden fields and an interesting doubling to the king's bust. One of only two confirmed certified examples between NGC and PCGS, with the other being the previous lot in this sale. Sunk off the cost of Nova Scotia in 1725, the Le Chameau was transporting supplies to the New France (Canada), making a routine voyage when a storm blew it onto rocks. An unsuccessful attempt to recover the cargo was made in 1726, with the trove only being discovered in 1965, becoming one of the most substantial treasures ever found in the country.

Ex. John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII (Stack's January 2006, Lot 441)
