Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1724-Y UNC Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Bourges mint, KM470.23, Gad-339 (R2), Dup-1638. Large palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. Displaying sharp devices and marigold fields with an intriguing die-clash to the reverse. The sole Bourges-minted date represented in the Parke-Bernet sale, with only 3 examples recovered in 1965. Sunk off the cost of Nova Scotia in 1725, the Le Chameau was transporting supplies to the New France (Canada), making a routine voyage when a storm blew it onto rocks. An unsuccessful attempt to recover the cargo was made in 1726, with the trove only being discovered in 1965, becoming one of the most substantial treasures ever found in the country.
