Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1725-R AU Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Orleans mint, cf. KM470.17 (date unlisted), Breen-349 (Extremely Rare, unlocated), Gad-339 (unpriced), Dup-1638, L4L-466 (R5). Large palms variety. Reportedly one of the rarest mints for this date, left entirely unpriced by Gadoury, undocumented by the Standard Catalog, and assigned an R5 rating by Les monnaies des quatre Rois Louis--the work's highest rarity. Though missing from both Ford and Partrick, we would note that we have offered one example previously (Heritage Auction #3049, September 2016, Lot 30738), an AU Details which brought $1997.50. Very likely from the Le Chameau shipwreck--though none were reportedly recovered in 1965--although we have no supporting documentation.
