Louis XV gold 2 Louis d'Or Mirliton 1724-A AU Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Paris mint, KM471, Gad-345 (R5), Dup-1637, L4L-464 (R4). The largest denomination to feature this famed design, nicknamed the "Mirliton" after the French eunuch flute, supposedly a reference to a popular song of the period that ridiculed Louis' finance minister, Cardinal Dubois. One of just two dates for which the type is known--with Gadoury suggesting this is the scarcer of the two--virtually all of the mintage of these Double Louis was recovered from the wreckage of the Le Chameau wreck off the coast of Port Nova Island, Nova Scotia. The a long time spent in saltwater has muted the surface luster to produce a matte finish, the piece appears essentially untouched and undamaged. Only the second example of the date we have offered, and a clear target for the enthusiast.
