Louis XVIII Countermarked 5 Francs 1814-M VF (Scratched), Toulouse mint, KM702.9. Displaying a laureate head of Napoleon right on the obverse, and a crowned N on the reverse of a Louis XVIII 5 Francs. A relatively unusual countermark, and the first such example we have encountered. Both bust-style countermarks (bearing the head of Louis XVIII) can be occasionally found on coins of Napoleon (see Editions V. Gadoury October 2021, Lot 803 and Heritage Auction #363, January 2005, Lot 21725), as well imperial eagle marks on the coins of Louis XVIII (see Jean Elsen Auction 134, September 2017, Lot 1770 and CGB Mail Bid Sale 11, January 2002, Lot 1701). Given the deliberate cancellation-like scratches on this piece, it would seem plausible that such marks were possibly propaganda during the 100 Days, though a bust countermark on a Louis XVIII 5 Francs dated 1817 may suggest later production (see Spink Auction 13013, June 2013, Lot 228).
