Louis XVIII gold 20 Francs 1815-R AU55 NGC, London mint, KM706.7, Gad-1027, F-518/1. A sharp example, showing champagne surfaces and hues of luster in the recesses. Struck during the exile of Louis XVIII in London. It is said that these fascinating issues were minted, for the most part, to fund British troops in France. After Napoleon was defeated in Waterloo, Louis reclaimed his throne and the minting ceased. Though these coins were initially rejected by the French Treasury as counterfeits, they were subsequently accepted, not for circulation, but for paying the indemnity imposed on France in the 1815 Treaty of Paris.
