George Mottley (†1883, hatter, in directories at 14 Redmond's hill, 1880-2) was a Crown witness in the three trials of Timothy Kelly in 1883, Kelly being one of the assassins of Thomas Burke and Lord Frederick Cavendish in Phoenix Park, Dublin, on 6 May 1882. During the trial, when he had been given police protection, it was stated that Mottley was a twice bankrupt. In early August 1883 the Press Association reported that Mottley had been shot dead in Philadelphia, where he had been living under an assumed name
