Septimius Severus. A.D. 193-211. AR denarius. 2.9 gm. 15 x 17 mm. Emesa mint. Struck A.D. 194-195. His laureate head right; [IMP CAE L SEP SEV] PERT AVG COS II / Ear of corn between crossed cornucopiae; FELICIT TEMPO. RIC IV.1 372. BMCRE 347 (Wars of the Succession). RSC 142. Extremely Fine; attractively toned and sharply struck with a bold portrait. Very Rare.

The clues behind the Oriental cast to the style of this coin, both portrait and reverse, is suggested by Mattingly in BMCRE writing about Septimius: "a provincial himself,..he had married a princess of Emesa, and the way was opened for Oriental influences in religion and even in politics to intrude on Rome."
