KINGS OF MACEDON. Amyntas III. 393-370/69 B.C. AR fourrée stater. 8.15 gm. 20.5 mm. Aigai mint. Head of bearded Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress / Horse standing right; AMY-NTA. SNG Alpha Bank 189. SNG ANS 87-89. Westermark, Remarks pl. LXIX, 32. Very Fine; good style; well centered; some breaks in silver plating exposing core in a few spots. A strikingly handsome ancient "counterfeit."

Fourrées were contemporary counterfeits, often struck with official dies and made to pass for silver. The coins have bronze cores and silver on the surface. The standard references list them along with the regular issues. Apparently it was an official practice, trying perhaps to stretch out the regal coffers.
